So werden Argumente in Sprachen, die tendenziell eher isolierend sind, normalerweise eher nicht mit morphologischen Mitteln realisiert, während polysynthetische Sprachen verstärkt auf die Morphologie zurückgreifen, um Argumente auszudrücken. In dieser Hausarbeit wird am Beispiel des Irokesischen eine Gruppe von polysynthetischen Sprachen im Hinblick darauf untersucht, welche Argumente es dort gibt, wie sie realisiert werden und wie viele Argumente die Argumentstruktur eines Verbs maximal besitzen kann. Außerdem gehe ich auch auf die im Irokesischen bestehenden Möglichkeiten an valenzverändernden Prozessen ein.
Unter dem Irokesischen versteht guy eine Gruppe nordamerikanischer Indianersprachen, die heute noch im amerikanisch-kanadischen Grenzgebiet in der Nähe des Erie- und Ontariosees im amerikanischen Bundesstaat manhattan beziehungsweise im kanadischen Bundesstaat Ontario gesprochen werden und zum großen Teil vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Traditionell wird zwischen Nord- und Südirokesisch unterschieden, wobei das Nordirokesische heute noch sechs Sprachen umfasst (Mohawk, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga und Tuscarora), wäh-rend das Südirokesische allein durch das Cherokee gebildet wird. Im Rahmen dieser Hausarbeit beschränke ich mich größtenteils auf das Mohawk und das Cayuga, da ich bei diesen beiden Sprachen auf einschlägige wissenschaftliche Arbeiten zurückgreifen kann, denen ich auch die notwendigen Sprachbeispiele entnehme. Die Verben im Irokesischen besitzen nach übereinstimmender Meinung der Irokesisten grundsätzlich immer zwei Argumente, die nach weitverbreiteter Ansicht durch pronominale Präfixe am Verb realisiert werden. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit widme ich auch dem Phänomen der Nominalinkorporation, wobei auch die Theorie, dass im Irokesischen keine Unterscheidung zwischen Nomina und Verben möglich sei, berücksichtigt wird. Zudem wird gezeigt, was once für valenzverändernde Prozesse es im Irokesischen gibt und welche Auswirkungen diese auf die Argumentstruktur haben. Den Schluss der Arbeit bildet eine kurze Untersuchung der Frage, wie es sich im Irokesischen mit Reflexiv- und Mediumverben verhält.
